Games People Play
A year-and-a-half ago, I became addicted to Wordle, the New York Times game that gives a person six tries to figure out a five-letter word by a process of letter elimination. Seems like many people I know were playing the game, and I'm not quite sure who finally convinced me to give it try. I'm glad I did though. I'm part of a text group that includes four friends playing the game. My run buddy also plays. And, on occasion, it will come up in other groups of people I know from other parts of my life. It has become extremely popular. I'm not sure what the draw is, but I think people just like to be distracted for a few minutes every day. And, it definitely stretches the brain.
I've always been a fan of these types of games. For awhile, the hot game was Words With Friend. I played that for awhile until it seemed that most of the people I was playing the game with, quit playing it altogether. I'm not sure sure why everyone suddenly stopped playing it, but they did. I miss playing the game, even though I only won about three-fourths of the time. I guess I liked it because it made me think...think about words and creating words with random letters.
During the past six months, friends recommended the New York Times game of Connections, which requires finding "connections" with four words from 16 words. Some days seems so easy, but other days the words just look like a group of random words. The game has become incredibly popular. I'm including a photo of the Jan. 10, 2024 Connections game.I also play game called 7 Little Words, which is a game my parents play regularly. When provided a grid of groups of letters and seven clues as well as the number of letters in each word, players have to construct the answers to the clues with the letters. I'm glad that my parents play the game and keep sharp. I usually play this game right before bed, and usually able to finish it in about ten minutes.
The New York Times Mini Crossword helps me close out my evening. It's often the last game I play right before I go to bed. It's a fun little crossword that mostly deals pop culture terms. The game keeps me in tune with the latest terms. I enjoy it.
I hope I'm still playing all of these for years to come!
